pre-mountain level/area Explanation: - the pre-mountain climatic level corresponds to the higher hills, hillocks groups and low mountain of 650 – 800 m, as well as to the lower section of all the mountainsides and base water ravines; it is characterized by the decrease of continental thermal influences once the altitude reduces, the reduction of the frequency of late frosts, the evident increase of waterfall and snow patch stability, under moderate wind conditions and notable frequency of the flow of air. - the mountain climatic level, characterizes the high relief rising on altitude from 800 to 1800 m, the limits varying according to the positions of the mountainsides towards the main elements which form the atmospheric movement; there are two sublevels comprised in this main level, namely: - the lower mountain sublevel (800 – 1500 m) – pretty moderate thermal conditions; a good example of it is the climate of Poiana Brasov: thermal system isolated from both hot summer weather and rough winter frosts (the last 20 years, the temperature did not attain more than –23,40C nor did it exceed 290C), moderate wind conditions, highly variable pluviometric conditions (the multi-annual average is of 160 rainy day), the snow patch lasts from October till March. - the upper mountain sublevel (1500 – 1800 m) – chill weather, with cold winters; approximately 100 snowy days are possible within a year, and the snow patch lasts for five months (December – April) - the alpine climate level – characterizes the highest sections of the mountains, attaining an altitude greater than 1800 m; the winters of this kind of climate are rough, and the summers are rather cold and damp, with speedy winds and a great persistence of the snow patch (approx. 200 days). tuupovaarankoulu.jns.fi/comenius/romania/romaniakuvaus/georomania.htm |

premontane zone / belt Explanation: 'Piso' is a hard one and its English translation depends on context. In this case, you could use 'belt' or 'zone'. http://www.ensayistas.org/critica/ecologia/diccionario/pa.ht... PISO ALTITUDINAL. ALTITUDINAL BELT. |
