4th year / grade of secondary education [add note] group B Explanation: In Chile 4º Medio is the 4th year (UK) or grade (US) of enseñanza media (ages 14-17), which comes after enseñanza básica (ages 6-13). So enseñanza media is secondary education, but it starts a year later than in Spain and two years later than in England and Wales. "Primary school: (Enseñanza básica) for children aged 6–13 years old, divided into 8 grades. Secondary school: (Enseñanza media) for teenagers aged 14–17 years old, divided into 4 grades." https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Education_in_Chile#Levels_of_e... So 4º medio is the final year of secondary education. This should be translated literally and an equivalent given in a note or in brackets. The equivalent will depend on the target. For example, in the US the equivalent is 12th grade, in England and Wales it is Year 13, in Scotland it is Sixth Year (S6) and in Northern Ireland it is Year 14. It would helpful to indicate that it is normally for ages 17-18. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sixth_form In Spain the equivalent is 2.º bachillerato. The B corresponds to a group or class within the year/grade. There are many Chilean school websites that refer to 4º Medio A, 4º Medio B, 4º Medio C, etc., and similarly for other years of Básico and Medio. Here's one, for example: http://www.aulavirtualrcv.com/aula/moodle/course/index.php?c... I think it's likely that these are streams (as they'd be called in the UK): in other words, A is the top stream academically, B the next, etc. On the other hand, they could correspond to subject concentrations. It could be that they have different meanings in different schools. But you don't need to know that; just put B or group B, and leave it at that. -------------------------------------------------- Note added at 22 hrs (2017-12-09 15:33:40 GMT) -------------------------------------------------- Sorry, I've just realised that what I said in the first paragraph above is wrong: Chilean enseñanza media begins at age 14, which is two years later than ESO in Spain and three years later than secondary education in England and Wales. |

'4º Medio B' seems to refer to group B of the fourth year of the intermediate stage. -------------------------------------------------- Note added at 1 hr (2017-12-08 17:47:15 GMT) -------------------------------------------------- Though according to Wikipedia, 'medio' is just another name for secondary education.
