Mike: this is a good option, however I finally used "non-regular student", because here in Argentina the !Alumno libre" does not attend classes. He only enrolls for final examinations and sets for the exam.
In my context I think non-regular student gave a more accurate idea.
On the other hand we also have auditors in our schools (those who attend some classes but are not regulars either)

No sé para dónde es tu traducción, pero yo pondría una N.de T. porque creo que no hay un equivalente.Yo pondría una aclaración diciendo por ejemplo:Free Student : without being admitted to a complete study cycle, is authorised to enrol in several classes ; has to complete the work as required and if he succeeds, may have the obtained results acknowledged.
