I UNDERSTAND THAT THIS MEANS THAT YOU CAN EITHER TAKE THE CLASS IN REAL TIME (I.E. EVERYONE IS ONLINE AT THE SAME TIME) OR DO THE CLASS WHILE OTHERS ARE OFFLINE AND THEN GET FEEDBACK LATER... ANY SUGGESTIONS?

asynchronous (any time, any place)

Explanation:
'Asynchronous' is correct and commonly used, but rather technical. Many sites include a bit of information to help those new to the concepts (any time, anywhere / any time, any place).

Which you should chose depends on the audience for the text.

Synchronous = real-time
Asynchronous = not real-time

Communication via forums, or bulletin boards, occurs asynchronously (not in real time) and involves posting text messages, which are then 'threaded' into a visual timeline and can be read and replied to by all participants of the discussion.

in your own time

Explanation:
The distinction is between 'real time' use and use 'in your own time'.

I actually work with one of these online teaching platforms when I'm not translating, and that's how we explain it to students. We certainly don't talk about anything being synchronous or asynchronous.

There are plenty of examples, from education and other fields:
