If anyone could tell me the US equivalent of these years in the Chilean education system I would be most grateful.

Context:
"charlas educativas en colegios, dirigidas a alumnos de 5to a 8vo básico"

5th thru 8th grade
Explanation:
I would just go with the above. In the state of Utah where I live, 5th and 6th grades belong to elementary school, and 7th and 8th grades belong to middle school.

Thanks to all the answerers, I am going to use 'through' here, but in accordance with the rules of Kudos I don't think I can not award the points purely because of a mispelling. In fact when I saw thru I just thought it was sms-speak and you meant through anyway. As a UK English speaker the fact that 'thru' is used at all is quite shocking to me :)

agree  Robert Copeland: I agree.... There are even some states where 7th-9th grades are still labeled as "Junior High Schools".....This is the safest bet!

  -> Thanks.

agree  Marcelo González: Depending on the school, 5th grade may or may not be included in "middle school." // As for "thru," unless it's a traffic sign (or an informal communication), I'd go with "through."

  -> Yes, looking back at it, "thru" might sound a bit too informal.

disagree  Richard McDorman: I'm sorry, but I absolutely must object. "Thru" is not a word in English, and must be avoided, especially in this context.

  -> Webster's has "thru" as a "var[iant] of through, and if you drive through NY state you might wind up on the NY State Thruway. Also, I believe that the asker was more concerned with the Chilean vs. the US school system.
