thinking of a way to express the idea that it was not a graded course, it is more like a way to demonstrate the person was there beyond just signing the attendance sheet and then going elsewhere... (probably the person needs this attendance certificate for credit at work?)

The slant is different - pointing more at attendance it would seem, but I think this is the English equivalent set expression.
