La evolución del delta del Patía en el Holoceno tardío ha estado caracterizada por la actividad tectónica en una zona litoral inestable, con procesos co-sísmicos de subsidencia y levantamiento de la franja costera. Un análisis sobre la reconstrucción del desarrollo de la cuenca del Patía al norte del delta, junto con los cambios vegetacionales, estudios basados en registros de polen, diatomeas y características sedimentarias (Vélez et al., 2001), sugieren que: (1) el lóbulo norte del delta está influenciado por la actividad fluvial entre 3850 y 2700 años AP; (2) después del anterior período, el delta está más aislado de los aportes fluviales y solo algunos pulsos fluviales interrumpidos se presentan entre 2010 y 1430 años AP; (3) en esta época, los manglares se desarrollan más desde la franja litoral hacia las partes lagunares aguas arriba; (4) entre los años 1430 y 810 AP se registra un avance de la franja litoral hacia el mar, debido posiblemente a un levantamiento estructural de origen tectónico; (5) entre 810 y 580 años AP,
