Dear translators, I hope you can help me. I am completely lost as to how on earth this odd expression could be rendered into English...

This is the context:

En síntesis, durante las ocupaciones tempranas ocurridas durante la transición Pleistoceno - Holoceno, tanto para el norte árido como el semiárido habrían imperado condiciones más húmedas que las actuales, aunque con ciertos matices regionales, las cuales habrían disminuido sustancialmente, hacia los 8.000 años A.P., posterior a lo cual se iniciaría un franco proceso de aridización regional, repuntando nuevamente las condiciones húmedas gradualmente desde aproximadamente 6.200 años AP llegando a condiciones similares a las actuales en torno a 4.000 años A.P, en el norte semiárido. Adicionalmente el Holoceno temprano y medio se habrían caracterizan además por una actividad reducida de El Niño, la cual se habría incrementado durante el Holoceno tardío, llegando a su mayor actividad registrada en torno a 2000 años A.P.
