Kalmuks Explanation: I think it is a missprint. There is such an ethnicity as the "Kalmuks", as documented in wikipedia and other resources. "A nomad horde that had previously ventured as far as the North Caucasus, namely the KALMUKS, broke up in the 1700s. Some, including the Turgut branch, returned to Jungaria and Kazakhstan and was accommodated by Qianlong Emperor. The other remain in North Caucasus, maintaining their Gyogyu Sect of Tibetan Buddhism to this day, and currently comprise the dominant nationality of the Kalmyk Tangch republic within the Russian Federation. The incumbent president of Kalmyk Tangch, Ilyumzhinov, a typical Russian plutocrat, is also the head of the FIDE." Hope this helps. Pablo Álvarez Reference: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Oyirad |

Please, note that the right name for the people which is widely-used is \"Kalmyk\" and \"Kalmuck\" is the term applied to the language. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Kalmyk_language The Kalmyk (Kalmuck) language of Kalmyks, it is spoken mainly in Kalmykia, in the Russian Federation. 160.000 spokers. It belongs to the western subgroup of the Mongolian languages and reflects the characteristic Mongolian vowel harmony, and its script is based on the Mongolian alphabet. It also has some elements in common with the Uralic and Turkic languages, sometimes speculated to be a member of the disputed Altaic or Ural-Altaic language family. This reflects Kalmyk\'s origin as the common language of the Oyirads, a union of four western Mongolian tribes that absorbed some Ugric and Turkic tribes during its migration westward. -------------------------------------------------- Note added at 5 days (2005-05-11 09:50:15 GMT) Post-grading -------------------------------------------------- Thanks, Katy! I had a word to friends born in Kalmykia who have first-hand knowledge of the matter=)... They confirmed that it\'s common to put \"Kalmyk\" when specifying their ethnicity in English. Good luck and best wishes from Russia! |
