technical assistant Explanation: I'm not disagreeing with patinba's answer, but due to changes since WWI, and based on the description found at: http://www.ccee.edu.uy/ensenian/catcontesp/Agencias_de_Publi... I'd go with "technical assistant". - Traducir esta páginaCompartir10 Apr 2012 – View all details on this Technical Assistant/Designer vacancy on ... Fully competent in both Adobe Photoshop and Illustrator, and preferably Mac literate. ... Graphic Designer, Healthcare Advertising Agency, Central London ... -------------------------------------------------- Note added at 1 hr (2012-09-12 18:51:37 GMT) -------------------------------------------------- Here's another clue as to what a "pasador" does, in response to Phil's doubts: ..."Es habitual que esté asistido por duplas compuestas por un redactor creativo, responsable final del texto o copy y un director de arte, que se encarga de la diagramación, el diseño, etc. Asisten a las funciones de las duplas creativas visualizadores y pasadores, hoy equipados y asistidos por elementos de informática." I think that the fact that these employees have to have a certain degree of knowledge of software, etc. (that may be variable from one agency to another), technical assistant is a sound bet. Another source describes them as working under the supervision of an art director or creative director, so the job has to be a bit more than just simple scanning. "Pasador: es aquel que pasa los bocetos de piezas publicitarias, bajo la supervisión de un director creativo o de un director de arte." http://www.sup.org.ar/convea.html |

production artist Explanation: I think this is the best fit. The pasador, these days, seems to put artwork into the computer, as quoted in Jenni's Uruguayan source: "ingresan un boceto dibujado manualmente en la Macintosh". Here someone looking for a job in Argentina as a "Content uploader / Pasador", involving "upload de contenidos web". http://www.adlatina.com/ofertas-laborales/?id=39371 However, I don't think a advertising pasador is or was just an uploader. It's some sort of art assistant, according to this: "Rubén Maril (hasta acá haciendo de pasador, que era un asistente del director de arte)" http://www.primerbrief.com/?p=944 Here is a collective agreement from Argentina defining the various jobs in advertising agencies. It won't let me copy and paste, unfortunately. The relevant bit is on p. 2, where under article 1 it lists and defines the jobs in the Área Creativa of an agency. They are: "Director creativo Director de arte senior Director de arte junior Dibujante ilustrador Diseñador gráfico/bocetista Pasador: Es aquel que pasa los bocetos de piezas publicitarias, bajo la supervisión de un director creativo de un director de arte". Then come the redactores (copywriters), corrector and secretaria. http://www.trabajo.gba.gov.ar/delegaciones/biblioteca_deles/... (Jenni has quoted this definition from another source in her note.) So the "pasador" belongs to the art team, but is not a graphic designer; the latter creates the "bocetos" and the pasador "los pasa". If we turn to a description in English of the jobs in a Creative Department in an advertising agency, we find the creative director, copywriters and art directors, designers, and finally production artists. These last are described as follows: "The production artists have the (often) thankless task of taking campaigns and preparing them for print. This will include setting the files up for the printing press, creating versions of one ad for multiple publications, and also creating updates to existing campaigns. Although it's not a job that requires a lot of critical thinking, it does require a great attention to detail and a studious attitude." http://advertising.about.com/od/advertisingglossaryc/g/The-C... It looks very much to me as though what a "pasador" does in Argentina is done by a "production artist" in the UK and America: at the bottom of the hierarchy of the art team in the creative department. -------------------------------------------------- Note added at 4 hrs (2012-09-12 21:44:31 GMT) -------------------------------------------------- Moreover, this solution fits the sequence in the ST: "fotocopiador, pasador, ilustrador y finalmente director de arte". He gradually moved up the hierarchy of the creative department, from office assistant to production artist to graphic artist/illustrator to art director. -------------------------------------------------- Note added at 4 hrs (2012-09-12 21:59:25 GMT) -------------------------------------------------- Obviously production artists, even more than other members of the creative department, spend most of their time on the computer. |
