Spanish term or phrase: Oriente Próximo
Kontext: newspaper article
I have a doubt about this term: is the translation = Near East and Middle East or only Near East or only Middle East?

Near East

Explanation:
Near East or Middle East would both work but "Near East" is neater. Simply to contrast with the "Far East," though where they were originally measuring from I have no idea. Good luck!

Middle East

Explanation:
This is more common than "near east", Esp. in the US.

I get 24K for "middle east states" and 1.8K for "near east states". I don't know if there is a semantic difference, but I think they are one and the same?¿?¿

disagree  Edward Tully: Middle East is "Oriente Medio", - the countries make no difference, this is a linguistic, not a geographic distinction.

-> Do you know which ones are near or middle? I assumed they are the same.
