When adverse events (or drug-induced problems) are reported from the study centers, the sponsors and associates need to evaluate the consequences and make responses -- if such events are too risky or carries a hugely negative impact on study outcomes, they may consider halting or even terminating the study. The evaluations must be based on professional (medical) knowledge / expertise. Naturally, these come from the doctors. So, the relationship does not sound very bizarre, really.
