Japanese term or phrase: 社保

This is on a receipt for medical fees from a hospital in Japan. Under 'Type of Insurance' (適用保険） the entry is 「社保」.
Would this be referring to social insurance (社会保険） or insurance that is paid by the patient's company/employer (会社)? In the context I would have thought the latter (and I thought the former was referred to as 国民保険), but I'm not sure.

"company"ではなく"employee"とした理由は、「社保」には公務員の「共済組合健保」も含まれる可能性があるからですが、「社保」と「共済組合健保」は別であれば、tsumuraさんの回答を少し手直しして"company health insurance"とすればOKであると考えます。

国民皆保険制度を採用している日本では、国民はこの制度に強制的に加入させられるものであるので、民間の保険会社が販売している健康保険商品はガン保険や傷害保険、入院保険など、国保や社保でじゅうぶんにカバーされない一部のものに限定されている。したがってこれらの民間保険会社の健康保険商品が"Employee Health Insurance Plan"として企業に採用されることはない。つまり、日本で"Employee Health Insurance Plan"または"Employees' Health Insurance Plan"と言うと「社保」を意味することとなる。

I think 社保 is short for 社会保険. 国民健康保険（I think this is the one you mean) is one of the 社会保険. 社会保険 includes not just medical, but unemployment, old age, etc.

Explanation:
Japan has 社会保険(=social insurance/security) system, which includes medical (health) insurance, along with employment, pention and others.
Medical insurance is divided into four, according to the type of occupation: we have 健康保険for employees of companies etc, 船員保険 for ship crew, 共済保険for government employees, 国民健康保険 for those who do not belong to any of the above.
The hospital charges the appropriate insurance fund based on which insurance the patient has. Therefore the Type of Insurance on hospital receipt would refer to one of the above.　健康保険 for company employees are usually called 社保.
So, the answer to the question would be 'social insurance', but not 国民健康保険. Neither is it the insurance paid by the company, if you mean an insurance policy purchased by the employer from an independent insurance company.

たしかに「社保」イコール「社会保険」ですが、この場合は文脈からいっても会社で加入している健康保険のことだと思います。それを「社保」といっている例は多く見られます。

質問者がすでに二通りの考えを挙げているので、その後者に賛成のつもりで簡単に"company's insurance"としましたが、それが適切な英語でなかったとしてもDuncanさんが分かると思ったものですから。意味がはっきりすれば英語訳は質問者がすぐに分かるレベルだと思います。

Raitei: "Company's insurance" is vague and doesn't have the same meaning as 社会保険. Even "company health insurance" wouldn't do because the native English reader would assume that it is a private insurance program. Social health insurance (program) is fine.
