The Three Ports of Matsumae Explanation: Or the so called "Three Ports of Matsumae" is fine I think. As far as I remember my history lessons, I don't think there is another expression...but there was not much about Matsumae. |

Reference: "Three Harbors of Ezo" Reference information: The port town "Hakodate" One of the famous "Three Harbors of Ezo" (now Hokkaido) along with Matsumae and Esashi, Hakodate has long provided an excellent natural harbor, and prospered as a trading center for marine produce. Following the reopening of Japan to foreign trade in 1859, Hakodate became a trading port like Yokohama and Nagasaki. This constant interaction with the outside world placed Hakodate at the forefront of modernization in Japan. The area around the mountain Hakodate-yama and the port of Hakodate still retains much of the atmosphere of the time, and many of the pseudo-Western style homes built from around 1900 to 1930 are in good condition....... http://www.jnto.go.jp/eng/location/topics/hokkaido/jnto/83dn... |
