quick and dirty vs. gold-plated Explanation: Simple, the US wants Japanese participation (financial, of course) in deploying a "quick and dirty" preliminary version while the defense industry feeds at the trough of the final, gold-plated version (which will probably only work in artificial tests at best). Alas, I'm out of practice framing this in English bureaucratese to match the Japanese original. -------------------------------------------------- Note added at 2003-04-19 21:44:40 (GMT) -------------------------------------------------- Now contrast this with the JH electronic toll collection (ETC) system. Those toll booth lanes are always empty because the Ministry insisted on the gold-plated version instead of a low-cost version that Japanese drivers could use NOW. |
