Japanese term or phrase: 横置円筒回転界磁形同期発電機
This is a type of alternator/generator used in a binary electric power generator. I understand that it is a horizontal, cylindrical, revolving type, but I just can't figure out the proper term for it.

Explanation:
Ah...you can feel the online drama with this one.

First off, I agree with Maynard in principal. I prefer "rotating" to "revolving". Also as Maynard says we do not tend to pile up so many modifiers in natural English.

In reality you can pretty much get to "cylindrical rotating field type synchronous generator" before people start adding commas. Check the following link to see what I'm talking about (scroll down a bit):

However, people do seem to use this luxuriously long "cylindrical rotating field type three phase synchronous generator". So in your case, I guess you could in all fairness go for "horizontal cylindrical rotating field type synchronous generator".

disagree  Maynard Hogg: Type is 直訳. Revolving should be rotating.

-> Well, I would say that revolving field type is for 回転界磁形 and it's not a 直訳.

Explanation:
I strongly doubt that English engineers the equivalent of 14-kanji compounds on their readers. Japanese engineers not only do, but up to five times in a four-line paragraph.
BTW, the "rotating-field" bit is strictly yawn material. Industrial grade generators don't have that many configurations.

Make that ¥"cylindrical rotor¥". I had thought that generators used only them, but there¥'s an alternative (at low speeds anyway): salient pole rotors.

Although the Beatles called their record Revolver, the correct verb is rotate. Alas, Google finds almost as many hits for ¥"revolving field¥" as for ¥"rotating field.¥"

Ahem. Translating 形 (or 型) as ¥"type¥" is the most obvious type of 直訳. Even worse is when 型 means ¥"inch¥" as in 1/2型CCD (sometime pre-直訳ed as 1/2タイプCCD.

Mr Reese is wrong in translating 回転 as ¥"revolve¥". Obviously my Beatles reference, from the 60s, was too subtle.

And my Google counts. This 古だぬき remembers when ¥"revolve¥" and ¥"rotate¥" were not synonymous. ¥"The Earth rotates as it revolves around the Sun.¥" Alas, that was decades ago.
