2人の侍のうちの1人は、その「天狗」です。天狗は死ぬ事を望み、相手をけしかけて戦いを挑みます。相手は最初の間はためらっているのですが、天狗を殺して戦いに勝つと決意したその時に、天狗がその相手に言ったセリフです。できるだけ短いイギリス英語のセリフで、十分その意味が表現される訳を教えて下さい。

Or something like "This moment is the reason for your existance."

I like "reach" here because that implies the 意味 while keeping it natural.

If you can go a little longer, something like "Everything you have done in your life has been for this moment." That's probably a better word-for-word translation but it is a bit longer and less fluid.

Hope this gives you some ideas, anyway.

I really don't like to translate words that don't carry much meaning or "weight" in this sense, such as 理由 and 意味.

Explanation:
I basically agree with Roger except that the expression as he has it is used in other contexts (pouncing on an opportunity but not necessarily one of life-crticial importance), and doesn't capture the idea of an entire life being intended for one moment in time. The drawback to my suggestion is that it's a bit longer and not quite as snappy.

武道を多少囓った者として、相手に真剣勝負で敗れてもよい（自分は斬られて死んでもいい）と覚悟を決めた天狗、その一方で天狗との勝負に勝つ（天狗をあの世に送ってやる）と漸く決意した相手方の侍……。この二人の侍はどのような間柄なのかと、つくづく考えてしまうと同時に、非常に惹かれるものがありました。何故なら、真剣による勝負という場で、敢えて相手に斬られようとする侍（この場合は天狗）の話は、今までに迂闊にして聞いたこともないし、書物で読んだ記憶もないからです。二人の侍の間は親子なのか、あるいは嘗て互いに稽古で汗を流した同門の高弟同士なのか……、興味は尽きません。そのような特殊な関係の二人の侍を念頭に、多分天狗は、「遠慮なく俺を斬れ。俺を斬ることによって、己れの役目を果たせ」といったこと言いたいのではという気がします。以上のように解釈した場合、「お前が生きてきた意味は、この瞬間のためにある」は色々と訳せると思いますが、私なら思い切って"Now prove yourself that you are SAMURAI"と意訳にし、"SAMURAI"の部分、映画の台本全体から判断して、最も適切と思われる単語あるいは語句を"SAMURAI"と置き換えると思います。以上、参考になれば幸いです。サムライ拝

Asker: Kameyamaさん、ありがとうございます。この相手の侍は戦いで深手を負い(4本の矢が体に突き刺さっています）、友とたまたまこの天狗の住む寺に逃げ込みました。一方この天狗は、彼の生きて存在する全ての意味が「戦う」ことにありました。これまでに何千人もの人間と戦ってきましたが、彼は誰一人として彼以上に腕の達つ人間に出会うことができず、「わしはもう疲れた」と言います。そして、その相手の侍が自身の寺に逃げ込んだ時、この男なら自分を斬れるかもしれないと直感し、その友の肉を料理して食べさせ、傷を回復させて戦いを挑みました。

Asker: 結果的にはこの侍が天狗に勝ち、天狗のこれまでの運命を今度は、自分が引き受けていくことになります。
