Inizialmente la concia aveva luogo in fosse, mentre adesso la maggior parte delle concerie moderne utilizza solo la concia in bottali (grandi botti di legno che possono contenere anche 700 pelli alla volta). Esistono due tipi di bottali: i mezzi bottali (che sono fissi, non possono roteare ma agiscono tramite delle pale interne; le pelli di rettile vengono trattate in questo tipo di bottale in quanto non possono essere sottoposte ad eccessivo frizionamento) e i bottali interi (che agiscono tramite rotazione; questi non vengono mai riempiti oltre la metà del bottale).
Ẻ importante sottolineare che ogni bottale viene utilizzato solo per una specifica fase di concia, in quanto all’interno dei bottali i diversi materiali non possono essere mai mescolati.
