Il Tempietto di Santa Croce, un edificio a *pianta trilobata* con absidi semicircolari sui lati est, ovest e sud (e probabile accesso dal lato nord) realizzato in pietre spaccate messe in opera in corsi orizzontali con muri di 80 centimetri, nonostante le dimensioni di 8 metri per 6,5, è stato oggetto di indagini archeologiche, dal 1999 al 2006, (ma gli studi e gli approfondimenti continuano), che hanno permesso di capire che l’edificio è nato come elemento integrante di un complesso episcopale creato intorno all’XI-XII secolo, su un preesistente tessuto edilizio romano, che gravitava nella zona del foro e con reimpiego di materiale lapideo più antico.
