Punto di partenza per realizzare una filigrana ricca di effetti in chiaro-scuro è la preparazione del punzone per trasferire l'immagine a “sbalzo” sulla tela filigranatrice. E' quasi certo che i primi punzoni furono approntati, nella metà del XIX secolo, scolpendo l'immagine in "positivo" sulla superficie di una tavoletta di legno duro (noce, ciliegio, bosso). Ponendo sopra il punzone così preparato la tela di bronzo, previamente "ricotta", ed eseguendo con attenzione una "battitura" tra i due elementi con apposito martello e cuscinetto di feltro, l'immagine si riproduce sulla tela.
