Numero di maschi in canto: è necessario compiere 3 uscite successive in ognuna delle aree di canto posizionandosi prima dell’alba nei pressi delle arene in modo da udire/osservare facilmente i maschi e le femmine presenti, senza disturbare l’attività riproduttiva (opportuno un adeguato mascheramento). E’ necessario quindi individuare una rete di punti di osservazione stabili nel tempo in modo da coprire l’intera area di canto. Periodo migliore: 20 aprile-30 aprile (5 maggio nel caso di elevato innevamento). Indicativamente le date di osservazione sono: 20, 25 e 30 aprile.

My main problem with this translation is that, at the beginning of the text, "canto" refers to the playback method of contacting the birds to check their presence in the local area; while, in this part of the translation "arene di canto" refer to "leks" (mating areas)
So how would I translate this? "Number of mating males"?
