Religion / opera plot
Italian term or phrase: Carmen è laica e ribelle
Comparing Carmen to the Spanish location and the other (Catholic) characters in the opera of the same name, a synopsis describes her as "laica e ribelle".... she definitely is not a laywoman .... but I can't find any particularly convincing translation for "laica"

Carmen is irreligious and rebellious
Explanation:
Or irreligious and a rebel
I would use irreligious as her irreverence towards religion is an important part of her character

Notes to answerer
Asker: Correct me if I'm wrong, but I have always considered "laico" as regarding religious beliefs, whereas free thinker could cover any field of thought...
