Is "walled-off from the past and the future" sufficient, or is there a better way of expressing the term?

(I understand the phrase as referring to the inability to conceive of the future, or perhaps better an anguish that comes when one realizes one is somehow cut off from the future. The author refers to a lack of transcendency in some cultures, lack of forethought or thought of the future. Honestly I'm not exactly sure I'm understanding this author.)

Thanks,

Peter

Explanation:
I would just say it that way and not worry about finding an English equivalent that has to do with embankments - because I don't think there is one.

hemmed in

Explanation:
This has a similar meaning to me, but just different imagery. Whereas the Italian connotes ideas of embankments, the English has a similar phrase which just happens to connote ideas about sewing - both being works of manual labour.

"Hem in
Verb 1. hem in - surround in a restrictive manner; "The building was hemmed in by flowers"
border, environ, surround, skirt, ring - extend on all sides of simultaneously; encircle; "The forest surrounds my property"
hedge - hinder or restrict with or as if with a hedge; "The animals were hedged in"
...
"hem in fish with stakes and nets so as to prevent them from going back into the sea with the ebb"

"Hemmed in between past and future..."

"But when it is seen that the past as memory is always a present experience, the boundary behind this moment collapses . . . And likewise, when it is seen that the future of expectation is always a present experience the boundary ahead of this moment explodes. The whole weight of there being something behind us or in front of us quickly, suddenly, and completely vanishes. This present is no longer HEMMED-IN, but expands to fill all time, and thus the "passing present" unfolds into the eternal present . . . . And this present is no mere slice of reality. On the contrary, in this now resides the cosmos, with all the time and the space in the world."

Example sentence(s):
  • "So we said, “Jesus, we have to watch ourselves too much around you. We feel HEMMED IN around you. Now you go back home where you belong and be a good God, and maybe we’ll see you of a Sunday morning.”"

trapped/caught

Explanation:
even "stuck", here.

"And only conceiving of life as trapped between the past and the future, makes one experience/feel spiritually and intellectually an anxiety of dearth, of any dearth.

Explanation:
Perhaps the author is saying that the feeling of being trapped in the moment, of the absence of continuity between past, present and future leads to a sense of lack and extreme anxiety?

A lack of meaning, of direction/progress, of purpose.

Makes me think of Sartre and the crushing weight of experiencing the emptiness of "the moment", that this instant is all there is and all there ever will be.

Example sentence(s):
  • It is only by imagining (one's) life as (being) suspended between past and future that one experiences the spiritual and psychological anxiety of want, of all wants.
