"Si presta particolare attenzione al ruolo di campiere che all'epoca è un sorvegliante armato che difende una proprietà da rapine. I mafiosi cercano di ottenere per sé, anche in modo violento se necessario, questa carica a danno di altri campieri non mafiosi o degli stessi proprietari che li impiegano."

This is a book about mafia and the word "campiere" features a lot. I think it could be translated as field warden, I found this expression used in a book on Mafia written directly in English so it should work but my doubt is whether I should translate it at all. Clearly, it is something specific of the Italian system and considering it is mentioned frequently the reader would become familiar with the word after a few pages. What is your view on this?

I would keep it in Italian, but specify his role maybe in brackets, at least the first time. If it is repeated throughout the text I would refer to him as "campiere". That is what I often do in very culture related terminology
