I've been living in Tuscany for 3 years and the first time I came across that word ('fondo') I was puzzled !!

It'a local (i.e. regional) word meaning both 'basement' and 'ground floor room'. Not really popular outside Tuscany !!!

In Tuscany these days you get "fondi interrati" (basements) and "fondi (al) piano terra" (ground floor rooms)
