Psychology / family therapy
Italian term or phrase: attutite dal racconto
"Su queste differenze polari dentro le famiglie e fra le famiglie mi sono trovato a riflettere soprattutto facendo terapie familiari. Anche i pazienti in terapia individuale ti parlano di mogli, fratelli, genitori a volte profondamente diversi da loro. Ma le differenze con le quali conviviamo ogni giorno sono attutite dal racconto. Diverso è avere lì di fronte a te, in carne ed ossa, genitori e figli, fratelli, mariti e mogli: le loro differenze si impongono e ti colpiscono".

toned down by the narrative
Explanation:
altrimenti si può anche usare "cushioned" che da la sensazione di un barriera invisible che separa l'impatto con la realtà.
A te la scelta.

Sure Pauley, the story told by the patient in the chair is OK... the context is that its one thing to be present in events that involve brother, fathers, wives bla bla bla....and yet another to just hear about what happed.... the simple fact the dear ones are not present gives the event/situation/story or whatever...less impact. It tones down some of the realty.

yes, narration or narrative as suggested by BT

however, I'd use narration, since it's the *act* or process of being narrated or narrating (i.e. narration, storytelling), rather than the product of narrating (i.e. narrative, story), that here is being compared to the *act* of interacting with people

Impact ... cushioned

Explanation:
I would use cushioned, but would add "impact". "... the impact of the differences ... is cushioned because they are telling you about it."

when we talk ... seem less pronounced

Explanation:
Hi Pauley,

I'd probably use 'talk' (the famous 'talk therapy') and turn the entire sentence around into something like:

But when we talk about the differences that we face in our daily lives these (differences) seem less pronounced.

or 'are more pronounced' (though I prefer 'seem')

Or (to solve the repetition problem):

But talking makes the differences we face in our daily lives less pronounced.
