jacking stations Explanation: This is all about pipe jacking. You dig a large trench or well down to the depth of the tunnel. Lower lengths of pipe into the well and then use incredibly powerfull jacks to push (la spinta - the thrust generated by the jack) them into the ground. Then you dig out the earth and are left with a tunnel. Tunnel boring machines work in a similar way in the sense that they are huge tubes driven by immensely powerful jacks, but in their case they have cutters on the front to excavate at the same time and the tubes are not the final linings of the tunnels. http://www.google.com/search?hl=en&safe=off&q=tunnels "pipe ... -------------------------------------------------- Note added at 23 hrs (2011-02-03 08:25:10 GMT) -------------------------------------------------- Jacking shaft or jacking trench might be for common. If you look up at the roof in the Porta Venezia station the huge broad arching roof was constructed before the tunnel was excavated from beneath it. It was constructed by driving pipes (1-2 m. diam.) side by side in an arch configuration from a trench. They then dug out the earth and every few metres they broke holes in the side to make connections between the pipes. Then they just filled all the pipes and the side holes in them with concrete and voilà they had the roof of a huge tunnel in place just a few metres below the surface with "untoppling" skyscrapers very nearby. They then just safely excavated under the roof (after digging trenches for the side walls and filling those with concrete), while traffic passed above normally. The alterantive was to close the road and dig a massive trench (the future tunnel) with great danger to nearby buildings and then put a lid on it "cut and cover", the roof. |
