Da un testo che descrive i cambiamenti nelle fortificazioni causati dall'uso sul campo di artiglieria da assedio:
". Sul campo di battaglia si afferma sempre di più l’uso delle artiglierie in fusione di bronzo, a polvere nera, ad avancarica, dotate di ruote per il trasporto. Il loro compito tattico è quello di gettare scompiglio negli schieramenti delle fanterie avversarie scompaginando le cariche di cavalleria. Le fortificazioni servono non più a impedire la scalata della muraglia eliminando i nemici ai piedi della stessa, per cui occorrono alte mura, caditoie per proiettili o liquidi bollenti e merlature a protezione di balestrieri ed arcieri, ma debbono avere baluardi tozzi a superfici sfuggenti e bassi profili delle cortine realizzate con materiali elastici (terra pressata e mattoni o pietra)."
