Questi rumori sono abitualmente percepiti solo dal soggetto che li presenta (acufeni soggettivi), talvolta possono essere percepiti da persone diverse dal paziente (acufeni oggettivi). Tali disturbi possono avere cause otogene (tappo di cerume, processi infiammatori acuti e cronici dell\'orecchio medio e interno, ecc.), oppure extra-otogene come medicamenti (chinino, salicilato di sodio, streptomicina, neomicina, ecc.), intossicazioni, traumi acustici, malattie dismetaboliche o endocrine, disturbi psicogeni, ecc.
