motorway refreshment areas/stops Explanation: autogrill is a brand name, but here (small a) it is used as a general name for service area along the motorway with a bar/restaurant e.g. "Motorways… Unfortunately we have used Motorways quite a lot… it’s the best way to get from point to point without getting stuck or lost in local traffic. We have never been on a Motorway that didn’t have that little pot hole that needed at least 6 months to repair so we have spent many a while just sitting. We hate the Motorway Refreshment areas but the toilets are usually clean" |

rest stop Explanation: there are many possibilities A rest area, travel plaza, rest stop, or service area is a public facility, located next to a large thoroughfare such as a highway, expressway, or freeway at which drivers and passengers can rest, eat, or refuel without exiting on to secondary roads. Other names include rest and service area (RSA), service station, resto, service plaza, and service center, service centre, and motorway services (or just "services") in the UK. Facilities may include park-like areas, fuel stations, restrooms, and restaurants. A rest area or rest stop with limited or no public facility is a parking area or scenic area. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Rest_area |

motorway service shops Explanation: I know it's a combination of other perfectly viable options here but as the turnstile is probably installed in the shop area I would go for this. Sometimes in UK for example, you don't go throught a turnstile to get to the restaurant area or toilets. -------------------------------------------------- Note added at 7 hrs (2012-01-29 11:28:30 GMT) -------------------------------------------------- also the Italian gives "superficie di vendita", sales....so I guess the specific area is in fact the shop. |

(motorway) service stations Explanation: simple as that, I'd say. A trade name that has entered colloquial vocabulary in the same way that 'hoover' has. |
