Just to give you a better idea of how it works in Italy: the ticket of the data zero may cost less than the normal ticket, but it's still a rehearsal in that the band may stop in the middle of a song and start again if they made a mistake/weren't happy with how they were playing -- not something you'd expect at a proper gig.

I get the feeling that this is one of those cultural approach terms where exactitude is dependent on the given location. If it is not free then that would take away the possibility of naming it a 'thank you' concert in English (if that even exists). I think that you are looking at it from the viewpoint (correctly so) that in Italy this type of concert is the final rehearsal played in a certain location and thus it is performed in public (and for money). To the best of my knowledge, in English culture we approach it from the opposite direction and call the first public performance after tour rehearsals a kick-off show or a show to launch the tour. There is no tradition of playing a final rehearsal in public before going on to another city to start the tour. And, in case there happens to be some instances of this happening, I would imagine it was held as a gesture of thanks and implied some reduction in price or even a free show. Otherwise it would simply be the start of the tour itself and not the end of the rehearsals.

I worked in a concert agency (http://www.fepgroup.it/) and as far as I know the data zero is NOT a free gig. The deal is: the band gets a venue to rehearse for free (without paying the rent, to put it bluntly) and the local promoter organizes a "data zero" and gets *all the proceeds* from it. The data zero is NOT advertised (because it's not an official gig) but is only promoted on a local level. Therefore I wouldn't say it's a "free concert" like you suggested.

non so come si dica in inglese, però la data zero è una specie di prova generale aperta al pubblico: un concerto con pubblico pagante che però funge da prova generale per la band/artista e che non viene pubblicizzato né promosso sui media (perché appunto non è la prima data del tour, ma la data zero). Spero di essermi spiegata.
