I understand that this is the position of "sweeper" in football, but doubt that it would be understood in this context in English:

“Non mi è mai piaciuto il business: sono un **battitore libero**. Con i soldi guadagnati ho prodotto la mia prima collezione, da solo, e l'ho presentata a Modamilano. Ho cominciato con l'abbigliamento, ma non lo sa nessuno”.

Has anyone got any good suggestions?

This was the closest to what I actually used, which was "lone rider" because that's what the client wanted, but I think if different contexts several of these answers might work.
