Explanation:
While it's quite true that this particular term is indeed an abbreviation, ROL is a very specific Italian institution. Many, if not all, of Italy's national collective employment agreements (CCNL) specify ROL leave entitlements (literally referred to as "permessi ROL", so you might also go with "ROL leave") which allow workers a minimum of "standard"/"no-questions-asked" leave time.
Quite civilized, but also one of the reasons that lines are so long at the post office!
