This is from a case study on a training initiative for the unemployed or underemployed:

La condizione professionale dei beneficiari...è composta da:
-soggetti in stato di disoccupazione 1.035 (46,1%);
-soggetti in stato di inoccupazione 686 (30,6%);

I find unemployment for both of these terms. Can anyone tell me the difference between disoccupazione and inoccupazione? Thanks!

I translated it in a FEANTSA report as this:
Inoltre a questi numeri si aggiungono le percentuali delle persone cosiddette inoccupate (ossia coloro che non lavorano e nemmeno lo ricercano) che vede ancora dei buoni risultati nel 2006 nel Nord Italia mentre anche questo dato è in crescita nelle regioni del Centro e del Sud.
Furthermore, in addition to these numbers there are also the percentages of the “unoccupied” (i.e. people out of work who do not even seek work) which recorded good results in northern Italy in 2006, while the figure was again on the increase in central and southern Italy.

I can tell you by personal experience concerning the filling in of forms, that by "inoccupato" we mean someone who has never worked before . Disoccupato is simply unemployed. Generally you can find the word inoccupato just in the forms for applying for some jobs... so obviously an "inoccupato" is someone who's looking for it...
