"ricongiunzione" was asked before on proz but didn't have much success. i take it they mean you can transfer your contributions as a freelancer and make them count now that you work for them. in any event, the things they look after for you with INPS:

"vecchiaia, superstiti, inabilita', assegni invalidita', supplementi pensione, riscatto laurea, rendita vitalizia, ricongiunzione periodi lavoro autonomo, riscatto lavoro estero, domanda versamenti volontari, rate maturate e non riscosse, assegno al nucleo famigliare su pensione" ecc.

oops - "independent contractor" is quite US, if this is not for across the pond you might prefer non-subordinate or autonomous worker or something else entirely to get the point across... your call!
