Law/Patents - Human Resources / maternity rights
Italian term or phrase: lavoratore autonomo
This is a text on the rights and allowances for maternity and paternity leave; the text makes the distinction between "lavoratore autonomo" and "libera professionista", while not giving any clues as to what the difference between the two is in practice. Could I translate the former as "independedent contractor" and the latter as "self-employed worker"? Any input would be very helpful.

self-employed worker
Explanation:
"Lavoratore autonomo" is a more general term, and includes "libero professionista". See Italian Civil Code, Titolo III DEL LAVORO AUTONOMO - Capitolo I - disposizioni generali;... Capitolo II - Delle professioni intellettuali. "Libero professionista" is a self-employed professional (worker). For several professions it is required to be a member of an "albo" or "elenco" [kind of guilds, which often have their own pension funds].
