Italian term or phrase: armi dotte
It's an expression that refers to "artiglieria, genio e marina" (in my case, only artiglieria and genio) . The sentence reads: "Per queste ragioni lo Stato eccelleva nelle **armi dotte**"
Is there any such expression in English? I did find references to "learned disciplines" but it's a more general expression. Thanks in advance.

scientific arms
Explanation:
L'espressione “armi dotte” deriva dal francese “armes savantes”; in inglese è tradotto spesso con "scientific arms" intendendo artiglieria e genio.

agree  Dr Lofthouse: sounds good to me as well

  -> thanks!

disagree  William Murphy: This term is not generic. It refers only to weapons and munitions. Any military unit designated as 'Ordnanace' was involved in the supply and/or maintenance of such. It does not work for the engineer or marine corps or, even for the artillery.
