From an article about Venice for a tourist magazine:

...nel 1386 venne istituita la professione degli “acquaroli”, che avevano l’ingrato compito di rifornire Venezia d’acqua, trasportandola dalla terraferma con le tradizionali imbarcazioni per il trasporto delle merci, i “burchi” e rivendendola “a secchi”.

This profession existed for 250 years. I understand what it is, but I don't know the correct English term.
