Le dimensioni di un bacino, il suo sviluppo, l'orientamento della rete idrografica, in una parola la sua geometria, dipendono dalle condizioni climatiche e geologiche della regione in cui esso si sviluppa. In base a queste condizioni i bacini vengono classificati in:

a) Bacini esoreici, o bacini caratteristici delle regioni umide a consistente piovosità, sempre alimentati e aperti all'esterno, organizzati in ruscelli, torrenti, affluenti e corso d'acqua principale che trasferisce infine le acque al mare. Appartengono a questa categoria i bacini della maggior parte dei grandi corsi d'acqua europei.
