Italian term or phrase: spianare i rilievi
This is from an article on the structure of the earth. Specifically, this part deals with orogeny and erosion.

L’erosione agisce contemporaneamente all’orogenesi e tende a ***spianare i rilievi*** che progressivamente essa forma.

I'm especially having trouble translating 'rilievi' as it doesn't simply refer to mountains here and 'reliefs' doesn't sound quite right. TIA for any help.
