masses isolated by impermeable strata Explanation: We are talking about the position of water tables here, ground water therefore, which has been isolated in big blobs of ground (soil rather than rock, so just masses, not rock masses, and masses rather than layers) by impermeable strata which is very probably rock. You could take Isabelle's suggestion of isolated masses trapped by, but IMHO you want "masses", which may or may not be veins. |
