without back-up Explanation: The 'bilateral' supplies to the main sections ensure that the trams get power even if one supply fails. But the terminals are fed only by one (the nearest) supply, and if that fails the trams grind to a halt. Collins ita<->eng dico: sbalzo: jerkily; (fig) in fits and starts |

unilaterally Explanation: "a sbalzo" seems to be used here in the sense of irregularly, unevenly, asimmetrically... since it is opposed to the symmetry of "bilateral", I'd go for a simple "unilateral" from De Mauro: a sbalzi loc.avv. CO Sinonimi CO incostantemente, irregolarmente Contrari CO regolarmente. -------------------------------------------------- Note added at 21 hrs (2008-12-28 11:01:20 GMT) -------------------------------------------------- i'm no expert at all, but I remain of the opinion that here "a sbalzo" has the basic meaning of fed unilaterally or by one (or at one ending, at one extremity, etc.), as opposed to two or bilaterally. have a look here: Modalità di alimentazione: I sistemi di alimentazione che si prenderanno in esame sono: • Alimentazione a sbalzo (da una sola estremità) • Alimentazione bilaterale o ad anello Le prime sono tipiche della trazione urbana, caratterizzata da molti carichi, distribuiti più o meno uniformemente. (http://209.85.129.132/search?q=cache:vW_en2CsuxMJ:www.itioma... |
