were on their third upgrade Explanation: try this. I think he means the old machines had been upgraded 3 time with extra RAM etc but were now at the end of their useful lfe. Certo, l'uso del termine "terza generazione" è improprio e fuori luogo. -------------------------------------------------- Note added at 3 mins (2010-07-13 19:27:42 GMT) -------------------------------------------------- oops - 3 TIMES. -------------------------------------------------- Note added at 3 mins (2010-07-13 19:28:21 GMT) -------------------------------------------------- "the machines were on their third upgrade" |

were aging Explanation: As Phil said, I think this is a reference to the "third age" as in U3A = University of the third age |

two generations back/behind/old Explanation: Just to throw yet another spanner in the works, I hear this in the sense not of third upgrade, but behind current technology by two generations. In this sense, yes, it could well be given simply as "aging" or "elderly", but the quantifier locates the age of the systems more precisely. In particular I do not hear it in the sense of 3G; that is a wireless communication cell technology, and without much more specific coupling of this data center to wireless comm I do not see that it fits. |
