relict community A community that formerly had a much wider distribution but now occurs only very locally. Such contraction can be caused by various factors including climatic change (e.g. glaciation). Communities widespread during glacial times may now be restricted to mountain tops (e.g. Upper Teesdale (England) contains an isolated flora characteristic of much of lowland Britain during glacial periods).

vestigial stands

Explanation:
Relitto means relic - in other words, it used to be much bigger, but there are only bits of it left. A stand is an area of trees. You could also say woods, but I don't think you can describe a wood as being part of a forest.

Example sentence(s):
  • n the mountainous centre of the province one can find vestigial stands of the formerly extensive Araucaria woods, p
  • Stand: a group or growth of tall plants or trees: a stand of pine.

relict woods/forest

Explanation:
