agree  Jo Macdonald: Ok, on old systems you change the advance with a lever on the bars, retard to start or idle, advance as engine picks up speed while riding. Been replaced by distributor mechanical/vacuum advance or electronic ignition mapping systems.

  -> They must have been great fun! If you weren't in too much of a hurry that is. I remember trying to set the timing using a strobe on the flywheel of a car.

neutral  Jo Macdonald: Timing curve would be ok on a modern distributor with spring and/or vac advance. If this is a really old system you change the advance with a lever on the bars as you ride
