Art/Literary - Art, Arts & Crafts, Painting / presentation letter of an art historian
Italian term or phrase: cerchia
hi, This is a presentation letter for a scholar applying for a bursary award. Could it mean sphere of influence? thanks in advance for any suggestions.

During this time he carried out with excellent results some research on the Abruzzese painter (but who was active in Rome in Mola's sphere of influence) Giovanni Battista Boncori

disagree  philgoddard: This is the wrong word - it means people linked by actual or perceived kinship.

10 mins
-> Thanks. I wonder about the connection if any between the expression and the picture in the link.

agree  philgoddard: You're right, but for the wrong reasons. "The circle of" means "the artists associated with".
38 mins
-> No Phil. I gave the answer thinking of your kind of answer. Later I added that link and said: strange that this guy about whose circle of colleague artists we are talking about drew a painting called "Circle".

neutral  Michael McCann: Normally in art, one refers to the "School of ..." implying a copying of style, etc. whether or not the actual painter had meet the master.
1 hr
-> Dutch School would be good or the School of Cortona. But here we don't have that

agree  Ernestine Shargool: Yes: Circle. (Totally confused by all the subsequent notes!)//Isn't the painting called: "The Martyrdom of St. Peter of Verona" BY artist/s in the circle of Pier Francesco Mola?
1 hr
-> Thanks! My link mentions a painting called "Circle" (coincidence).

agree  Magda P.: I prefer school but there is also "clique" - see "impressionists clique"
13 hrs
-> clique sounds pejorative to me. Nothing seems pejorative in our text. Thanks for the vote of confidence!

agree  Mr Murray (X)
13 hrs
  -> Mille grazie!

agree  S E (X): "Circle" is right -- "school" would mean something different. "In the circle" of implies "influenced by" whereas "in the school of" implies "followers of". (One can be in influenced by an artist without being a follower of that artist.)

this Mola exhibition seems to confirm it: Gli allievi di Pierfrancesco Mola: Sono presenti anche varie opere di ambito moliano o di allievi del pittore, che dimostrano la sua fama in vita e dopo la scomparsa. Tutti dipinti inediti o mai esposti al pubblico.
Tra le nuove acquisizione critiche nell'ambito della scuola del Mola, l'Elia con l’angelo di Giovan Battista Boncori,
