Italian term or phrase: a compenetrazione della semisfera nello spazio dell'aula.
.

I'm afraid I'm totally out of my depth here. Can anyone help with the phrase above?

Context: description of the architecture of Hagia Sophia church in Istanbul.

Notes to answerer
Asker: Thanks, I appreciate your contribution but am looking for a more explanatory solution rather than literal translation. What does the writer mean exactly? It's not clear to me - especially as this (if I have understood correctly) is one of two 'experiments'... I'm lost!

agree  philgoddard: "into", not "in". And Manducci - I think a literal translation works fine.

the compression of the space between/separating the hemisphere and the hall

Explanation:
Hi, if you are looking for an "explanatory" translation, this might spark some ideas. The space between the two is compressed and the hemisphere ends up "invading" the volume of the hall. HTH
