obscure/mysterious Explanation: Perhaps "obscure/mysterious nature of space".... -------------------------------------------------- Note added at 14 mins (2009-01-08 17:01:25 GMT) -------------------------------------------------- Having googled Schmitt (sorry - not up to speed on him!) I found "The work of Carl Schmitt, on its face, presents us with enigmas; it is esoteric, arcane, words that recur both in scholarship about Schmitt and in his own writings". So why not "enigmatic nature", if not straightforward "arcane nature"? I think you have to accept that arcanico = arcano. -------------------------------------------------- Note added at 49 mins (2009-01-08 17:36:56 GMT) -------------------------------------------------- Right, well I have had a look. It's not in De Mauro or Zingarelli (monolingue), or Florio (I had a look just in case!). The Shorter Oxford English gives "arcanal" which is interesting - as well as arcanum/arcana. So, perhaps you're right - you might have to face up to the professor! -------------------------------------------------- Note added at 51 mins (2009-01-08 17:38:26 GMT) -------------------------------------------------- I posted the above before reading Emanuela's note - it's interesting that the term appears in use, but not in the dictionaries (or the ones I looked in, at least!). -------------------------------------------------- Note added at 1 hr (2009-01-08 17:49:50 GMT) -------------------------------------------------- One last try - next time I'm in the NLS (Edinburgh) I could look in the Grande Dizionario (Tommaseo-Battaglia). I like the idea of "potatos" - a little more down to earth! |

Our Name Many people ask us what our name means and it is pronounced. Arcanic is a unique derivation of the word arcane, which means mysterious, secret, or understood by few. As far as pronunciation is concerned, Arcanic rhymes with the word mechanic." ... I do not know if the correct spelling is archanic, but I prefer this to arcane. It could make smile, as many other philosophical terms. -------------------------------------------------- Note added at 1 hr (2009-01-08 18:20:52 GMT) -------------------------------------------------- Check here, you will find reference to "arcanic" and Carl Schmitt: http://www.verlagoesterreich.at/pdf/voe/magazine/juridikum/v... -------------------------------------------------- Note added at 2 hrs (2009-01-08 19:10:32 GMT) -------------------------------------------------- ...He seems arcanic...! -------------------------------------------------- Note added at 2 hrs (2009-01-08 19:12:50 GMT) -------------------------------------------------- ops, read "arcana imperii" -------------------------------------------------- Note added at 15 hrs (2009-01-09 08:43:05 GMT) Post-grading -------------------------------------------------- you are absolutely right, thanks! |
