To give an idea of what I'm looking for:
I translated for academic readers. Some native English speaking readers in the project complained that they wanted something more "user friendly" for a wider audience. Things like Foucault's "responsibilisation", didn't exactly go down a bomb, told me the word didn't exist.

Notes to answerer
Asker: I have a fair idea of what it means Mimoza, but the ammo is useful. That is exactly how I translated it first time round. The reader's comment was "What does this term mean?".

Asker: Yes that's what I thought Ivana, public space is public space. I did wonder if my mind had flipped with all the financial reports, or maybe we've both flipped :).

agree  Ivana UK: "the creation of public space" - I can't see how else you could possibly translate - public space is public space - that's the term ! http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Public_space and http://www.cleanersafergreener.gov.uk/en/1/pslcreationofpubl...

  -> Exactly. Thanks Ivana!

agree  Jim Tucker (X): yes - would use "create" rather than "make" - trans. should tell reader that "public space" is standard terminolgy. I do lots of architecture texts and I don't know how many thousands of times I've used it.

  -> Thank, Jim. Much appreciated.

disagree  Ashish (HIN,ENG) Nadia (ITA): i feel that the emphasis as brought out by the context is naunced and is not conveyed conceptually in this particular interpretation

"open space" is another concept you might want to explore. I am aware it refers to a specific methodology of sharing and discussion, but the term and the concept might give you some ideas

Basically, this was to introduce some "lateral thinking" to the concept.
Information and knowledge in many other fields can also be in the public domain.

Asker: I did consider public domain, but as mimoza says, its a copyright patent term, while open space technology is a communication technique.

making space(s) public

Explanation:
Hi Jim,

What about maintaining the order of the Italian notions, which keeps the end-focus on "public" while at the same time making the English a little less arty-farty?

agree  Ashish (HIN,ENG) Nadia (ITA): i agree quite wholeheartedly as the context does suggest the same to someone from an architectural background like me especially when read with the closing words 'promuovere la qualità della vita e il benessere nei quartieri' 'user-friendly' stayss a ?
