Chemin de ronde /allure / wall-walk Explanation: Also known as "cammino di ronda" in Italian I think it's this, only there are a number of synonyms which are listed in the refs below: see https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Chemin_de_ronde http://en.mimi.hu/architecture/allure.html Allure or Wall-walk: passage behind the parapet of a castle wall Allure, Alur, Alure: A passage or gallery behind a parapet at the top of a wall of a fortification. Also known as a bailey walk, parapet walk, wall walk and wall walkway. See alatorium. (O.E. alours). http://www.proz.com/kudoz/italian_to_english/history/1708282... -------------------------------------------------- Note added at 18 hrs (2016-03-23 06:14:17 GMT) -------------------------------------------------- confronta queste due: https://it.wikipedia.org/wiki/Fortificazioni_di_Rodi Bastione d'Italia Rodi, Il Baluardo del Carretto e, in primo piano, la cortina angolata Il bastione d'Italia o del Carretto fu il luogo nel quale le truppe di Maometto II fecero breccia nelle mura e vennero poi respinte nell'assedio del 1480. Venne fortificato e munito di passo di ronda con postazioni per cannone dal Gran Maestro Fabrizio del Carretto. e il sito in inglese: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Fortifications_of_Rhodes Bastion of Italy Post of Italy or Del Carretto Bastion. This is the place where the troops of Mehmed II breached the walls and were then repelled by the knights during the siege of 1481. Grand Master Fabrizio del Carretto had it armoured with a chemin de ronde to hold cannon emplacements. -------------------------------------------------- Note added at 23 hrs (2016-03-23 11:01:49 GMT) -------------------------------------------------- https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Chemin_de_ronde also says: A chemin de ronde (French, "round path"' or "patrol path"; so if you want something more neutral you might say patrol path -------------------------------------------------- Note added at 1 day4 hrs (2016-03-23 16:01:29 GMT) -------------------------------------------------- Look at this reference - it's not clear whether these are all or partially underground: http://www.comune.taranto.it/attachments/article/3694/Capita... page 37 Sempre lungo via Cava di grandissimo fascino e di indubbio interesse storico per la lettura della stratificazione nel passaggio dall’età greca a quella altomedievale, sono gli ambienti cavati nel fianco occidentale che sono risultati in origine comunicanti fra loro e collegati con quelli che si aprono sul vico Cosa mediante stretti passaggi, certamente costituenti antichissimi e segreti camminamenti, anche in considerazione del fatto che siamo proprio nei pressi dell’antica cinta muraria. -------------------------------------------------- Note added at 1 day4 hrs (2016-03-23 16:09:27 GMT) -------------------------------------------------- there is a picture here - looks like an underground passageway - I guess I would also call them underground tunnels: http://tarantoipogea.it/2015/11/09/cantiere-maggese/ -------------------------------------------------- Note added at 8 days (2016-03-30 14:32:17 GMT) Post-grading -------------------------------------------------- You're welcome - it was fun and I learnt a lot! |
